Explanation: Early in Napoleon’s career, he was assigned to go to the Ottoman Empire to assist in modernizing their artillery, as Napoleon was, himself, from an artillerist background. A few short days before he was to leave, however, he was caught in the midst of unrest by royalists who opposed the French Revolution.

He suppressed the attempted royalist coup, famously, with “a whiff of grapeshot” - cannons stuffed with small musket balls to give a shotgun-like effect. Very deadly at close range.

Realizing that this young nobleman was not as royalist-friendly as his background might imply, and that he had immense reserve and tactical sense, the French Revolutionary government decorated Napoleon and reassigned him to a much more desirable command in Italy… where he would earn further glory to inflate his ego, and his ambitions…
