France has an undeserved reputation in some corners for being a pushover, but France terrorized Europe during the Early Modern Period, culminating with Napoleon Bonaparte all-but-subduing the continent. French imperialism in Algeria and Vietnam was also quite… vicious.
Lastly, during WW2, both the French Resistance and the Vichy French fascist collaborators were quite eagerly brutal towards one another.
