Note: Panis quadratus often had a hole so multiple loaves could be carried on staffs, especially by street vendors. It was not a style made by legionaries on the march, and so the ’opportunity’ generally would not arise even if the horny soldiers thought of it.
It was divided up like that so people could easily tear individual ‘slices’ out for eating. The convenience of modern civilization!
So before bread was pre-sliced, did people say “this is the greatest thing since segmented bread with a hole in the middle?”
Bread doesn’t have to be circular to be segmented.
i think regardless of opportunity, very few people would opt for the bread over just having a go at themselves, unless that bread was magically soft and moist
Why the hell don’t we transport donuts this way?!
True Roman bread for true Romans.
Panis Quadratus, albeit round, does go into the square hole.
Last line:
IDK what the roman name for Memri Tv would be.
