Explanation: The Kaiser Roll is a 19th century AD Austrian invention named for the Austrian Emperor ("Kaiser” in German). “Caesar” in Latin is pronounced closer to “Kaiser”. The word “Kaiser”, not coincidentally, is derived from “Caesar”.

Thus, Caesar is honored that we named the Kaiser Roll after him 🙏

Fun Fact! Romans believed that access to bread was a fundamental part of civilization! While grain porridge had some cultural currency as a ‘traditional’ or ascetic food for special occasions, even a poor CIVILIZED man should be eating BREAD! Mills and bakeries were universal features of new Roman colonia. And in that spirit, even the Roman Legions would drag along heavy stone hand-querns on the march, and employed specialist bakers as soldiers. If a man isn’t eating bread, he’s basically an animal! Or worse, a barbarian! 🤢

And the traditional roman bread was round and pre-marked in 8 slices. Not entirely unlike a pizza.

Addition, we call it Kaiser Semmel and it costs around 0,45€ per piece, it used to cost 0,36€

Bread subsidies are weakening, time to pelt the Emperor with stale crusts until he fixes it! 😭

This is why the first thing I build in every city is a granary. 😌

AND a salad! We name a lamb chop, and drink after dude and you can plan a whole evening around him!

I don’t follow the logic here. Ceasar literally means emperor, which is Kaiser in German.

This is like saying Tyrannosaurus rex is obviously named after king George, because rex is king in Latin.

Caesar used to be a regular Roman name, before it became synonymous with emperor.

Which Ceasar do you think of when someone says “Ceasar?”

milan, unfortunately

Non Rex, sed Caesar!

It’s named after the Austrian Kaiser…

And the Kaiser is named for Caesar!

Do you think ol’ Gaius here knows that?
